IN an interview with Sheffield Base - Sheffield University’s Online student newspaper - Nick Harris criticised the major parties for their lack of action in confronting the message of hate and racism from the British National Party.
"If people are telling pollsters that they are considering voting for the BNP then the mainstream parties have obviously been complacent", he said. “But I don’t think there should be a huge panic. I fundamentally trust the commonsense of the British people. Historically we don’t go to extremes."
Nicholas Harris, Chair of Conservative Future said that the apparent growing popularity of the BNP was disappointing, but doubted that many would get elected. "From the Conservative’s point of view we need to try and engage with the people who are thinking of voting BNP and address their concerns."
Harris said that the main political parties are afraid of discussing the issue of race and immigration, and that this can play into the hands of the BNP. "When the Conservatives tried to raise this issue at the last general election, we were accused of playing the race card, which was outrageous. If a party wanted to talk about the state of the economy you wouldn’t say they were playing the economy card."
Harris also thinks that the militant stance of the Union against the BNP may be counterproductive.
"To simply say ‘stop the BNP, they’re evil,’ doesnt really get you anywhere. What we need is an open discussion."
THE whole of Conservative Future Sheffield extends its congratulations to our Political Officer, Emily Savage, for her success in being elected to not one, but two committees in the recent Union Committee Elections.
The two Committees are the Commercial Services Committee and the Academic Committee. The best of luck in your time with them.
Conservatives punish Blair in local elections
IF a week is a long time in politics, two months must be a century. Our apologies for the lack of updates over the last month, but it really has been all hands to the wheel campaigning in Fulwood and Dore & Totley.
Now, as the political landscape settles after May 4th’s local elections Conservative Future Sheffield will be resuming normal operations.
Unfortunately we were unsuccessful in securing Janet Chapman in Dore & Totley. Fulwood’s Conservative Candidate, Caroline Cooper, put up a brave fight with limited resources but was unfortunately forced into second place.
Sheffield as a whole remained remarkably unchanged, despite the scandalous events of the past week.
The story was very different around the country, as David Cameron’s message of hope and change translated into over nearly 320 extra seats for the Conservative Party. We’re on our way! The people of Sheffield just haven’t got the message yet.

CF Students lobby in support of Coalition 2010
CONSERVATIVE Future students made their way to Westminster in support of Coalition 2010 on Wednesday 1 March.
The lobby group Coalition 2010 is a united alliance of leading organisations within the education sector that are committed to keeping the £3,000 cap on top-up fees for full-time undergraduate students in England.
Richard Williams, Paul Hayes and James Keeley attended a meeting organised by the NUS with speakers from all the major political parties. The speakers were Bill Rammell(Minister of State, Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education), Ed Davey (Libdem Ed. spokesman) and the one and only legend that is Boris Johnson Conservative Shadow Higher Education Minister.
Boris Johnson gave quite a passionate defence of Conservative Party policy on top-up fees to a fairly hostile student audience. They had a very brief chat with him after the meeting and he said that Sheffield University was on his to do list of visits. So watch this space!

FORMER Conservative Future Sheffield Chairman Luke Graham was elected as Finance Officer of The University of Sheffield Students' Union (SUSU) on Thursday.
After a closely fought contest he emerged victorious from a field of 5 other candidates to thunderous applause from the packed out Bar 1, where the results were announced.
Running on a "Golden Ticket", his innovative and hard thought campaign proved the most in line with voters’ thoughts on the finance of the Union.
As the founding member of the current Conservative Future here in Sheffield, CF Sheffield would like to wish him all the best in his new role, and well done!
THE leader of the Democratic Republic of Congo Conservative Party
spoke about reform of the current system of presidentialism into democracy in Congo on Tuesday.
His talk and presentaion was an excellent opportunity to find out how Conservatism is being used to help those in the developing world, and how it can help those in Britian.
CF Sheffield members had the chance to ask him about how the democratic process in the DRC was controlled by the government and how elections were rarely free.
